my mother asked as she put the final touch of hairspray on my hair.
“Are you ready for tonight?”
That night was the first ballet recital of the year and for the first time, I was placed front and center in my dance. Although I was excited, the pressure was building as I knew everyone would be watching from the audience. I started anxiously walking through the dance steps when I noticed my dad walk through the door.
Wanting to capture the moment, he held up his camera and said “Smile!” but my nerves prevented me from looking up. The next thing I knew he began dancing alongside me but over exaggerated the moves in a funny manor to grab my attention. I instantly felt at ease and laughed while I kept dancing. Click click click, the camera went off!
I’ve come to realize that photography is not just about photographs, it’s about the experience that creates the photographs. It’s a moment in time that captures how you looked and how you felt. In a split second, my dad helped me see past my nerves and brought back my excitement, love and joy for dance all while documenting it on his camera! He turned that simple moment into a memory I will cherish forever which is exactly what I want to provide to others.
This is reason I became a wedding photographer.
